Title 1 STAR Reading

What is Title 1?

The purpose of Title 1 is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and state academic assessments. Title 1 funding first began under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965 as part of the Great Society Program. Title 1 is now the largest federally funded program. The funds provide schools with additional staff, additional materials for our kids, staff training, supplemental materials for teachers and family engagement opportunities.

How do our Haw Creek Hawks benefit?

Title 1 or STAR (what we call our Title 1 time) is a school-wide program where all students and staff benefit from the federal funds. A portion of our federal funds are used to fund a literacy specialist and Title I assistants. The specialist and the assistants conduct small group literacy lessons in grades K-5 during the STAR time (STAR time is our small group literacy time in each grade level). Funds are also used to purchase items that support the students' literacy knowledge. Family engagement activities are also funded by our Title I funds.
