board briefing 10 6

Superintendent’s Comments

October represents our second full month of the 22-23 school year, and similar to past Octobers, it’s proving to be a busy month in the schools! You will hear a presentation later in the agenda from Dr. Donna Lanahan, principal of our Early and Middle College (MC) located on the AB Tech campus. She will outline the potential for a future revision to the MC program that aligns with many of the key traits associated with the state’s newly released Portrait of a Graduate. At the portrait’s core is a well-prepared graduate that is College and Career Ready. The Career Center for Innovation represents a model for connecting a high school diploma, a college-based certificate or license, and internships/apprenticeships for students in their desired career pathways. The most exciting component of the student’s journey would be a commitment of employment as part of their graduation ceremony.

Important to increasing career readiness are more opportunities for students to be introduced to potential career pathways. Tomorrow we will be sending 150 high school students to Borg Warner Turbo as a part of Manufacturing Day where they will tour the facility and hear from area employers and leaders in advanced manufacturing. Later, on October 17, our Career Tech Education Dept. will be hosting its second annual Careers on Wheels. This will include all fifth graders district-wide who will travel to the Biltmore Church-Arden campus to meet and talk to over 100 businesses that use vehicles in some form or fashion as a part of their work! What an exciting hands and eyes-on career exploration event.

A reminder that on October 11, T.C. Roberson High School will be hosting the annual County-Wide Advisory Council session beginning at 6 p.m. The central topic will be School Safety, which will be introduced by Mr. Joe Hough and include information regarding our School Resource Officer program and efforts toward enhancing student Social and Emotional Wellness.

On a closing note, congratulations to Dr. Jamie Johnson selected by her peers as the 2022-23 Principal of the Year. This is an extremely well-deserved honor!

At tonight’s board meeting we had a full agenda with engaging presentations. We recognized Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin for his years of service to Buncombe County Schools. This will be his last board meeting as superintendent. We also learned more about the development of the new Buncombe County Center for Career Innovation (BCCI).
