Second graders at Haw Creek Elementary experienced a week they would never forget, thanks to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation (BCSF) and the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Enrichment Committee.
The enrichment committee had set an ambitious goal for the school year: to provide three enriching experiences for students. One opportunity that caught their attention was the LEAF Global Arts visiting artist programs, which promised an engaging cultural experience.
“Without the help of the BCSF grant, we would not have been able to provide this experience to our students,” said Principal Christen Davidson. “This experience allowed students to explore physical movement, rhythm and patterns while learning about the rich cultural history of songs from the Ivory Coast in Africa.”
Experiences like the LEAF program are invaluable for students. This opportunity was not just about learning new music and dances, but was about trying something new.
“By the end of the week students were excited and smiling as they performed in front of the entire school,” said Mrs. Davidson. “It was amazing to see their confidence grow. Days later you could hear them chatting about how much fun they had.”
The Enrichment Committee is already planning a variety of activities for students next school year with content focused on art, science, literacy and math.
