Janice Strickland Yeager, wife of Dr. J. Frank Yeager, Jr., speaks at a celebration of life honoring him.

On Aug. 9, dozens of friends, family members, and colleagues met to celebrate the life and service of former BCS Superintendent Dr. J. Frank Yeager, Jr., and to dedicate the former board of education meeting room in his honor.

Dr. Yeager, who served as superintendent from 1991-97, passed away on July 4, 2023, at 87. He built a storied career as a Special Agent in the U.S. Secret Service assigned to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He was also a former teacher, head football coach, and agent for the Office of Civil Rights working to desegregate school districts in the South. Later, he served as a deputy superintendent or superintendent in five school districts.

“Dr. Yeager exemplified what it means to serve all students with passion and purpose,” said Ms. Ann Franklin, chair of the Buncombe County Board of Education. “He is one of the giants on whose shoulders we stand and an inspiration for leadership as we continue to guide our students into the future.”

At the end of Wednesday’s program, Ms. Franklin and BCS Superintendent Dr. Rob Jackson unveiled a plaque renaming of the former board meeting room as the Dr. J. Frank Yeager, Jr. Room. The room is now utilized for professional development.
