Mrs. Jordan with her class and children

Mrs. Leigha Jordan, of Valley Springs Middle School (VSMS), has been selected as a North Carolina state finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Teaching. A math teacher beloved by her students, Mrs. Jordan will be recognized in August at the State Board of Education for her achievement, as well as at the North Carolina Council of the Teachers of Mathematics Fall Conference in November. She is the first secondary school teacher in Buncombe County to be a finalist for this prestigious award. Her husband and her two children, her class, VSMS principal Will Thrasher, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Reed, K-12 Mathematics Specialist Stefanie Buckner Hill, and Director of Secondary Education Ms. Tonya Robinson all came to surprise Mrs. Jordan with her recognition.
