W.D. Williams Elementary students fell in love with books this Valentine’s Day.

Thanks to a grant from the Buncombe County Schools Foundation, Ms. Becky Sisler’s English language learners and their families received copies of classroom books to take home, during a Valentine’s Day-themed literacy event on Tuesday. The books and other texts are culturally rich and invite deep discussions about many topics.

“The families were so grateful to receive materials to use at home,” Ms. Sisler said. “These materials include books students have read in class, so they can share their knowledge with their families. We also gave Fundations sound cards, fluency passages, and decodable readers. This event for multilingual families was combined with a schoolwide event promoting reading fluency within the Wit and Wisdom curriculum. This was successful, because it was a home to school curriculum connection, and parents can be invested in what their children are learning.”

Ms. Sisler hopes to expand the future with more take-home books in the future.
