Buncombe County Schools (BCS) is filled with extraordinary educators and support staff. BCS recruits only the best to inspire, educate, and challenge students on a daily basis. In this BCS Staff Spotlight we are featuring Haw Creek Elementary’s Teacher Assistant of the Year Sharon Kertesz.

Ms. Kertesz has become a familiar face around the school for the past twelve years. She has helped hundreds of students during their time at Haw Creek. Her colleagues rave about her caring nature, and passion for students.

“What stands out the most about Ms. Kertesz is the love she has for every student,” said Deborah Rowland, Head Secretary. “She makes sure each student has what they need throughout the day.”

Many say that Ms. Kertesz is a key component in making Haw Creek a welcoming place. She is always willing to help anyone in need. Ms. Rowland describes Ms. Kertesz as being the kind of person that puts others first.

“Ms. Kertesz makes Haw Creek a better place to be for everyone,” Ms. Rowland said. “She is always willing to help in any way she can. Ms. Kertesz is definitely a part of our Haw Creek family, and she is vital to the work we do on a daily basis.”

Being a teacher’s assistant is a hard, but rewarding job Ms. Kertesz said. She looks forward to seeing her students each day, and make a difference in their lives. It’s her mission to make sure not only the students thrive, but the staff as well.

“Everyday is different for a teacher’s assistant and I love that,” she said. “I love spending one-on-one time with students as it gives me the opportunity to see the students grow and learn over the course of time. I love to call this place home.”
