Breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost to all students next school year! We are pleased to inform you that Buncombe County Schools will be implementing a program available to schools participating in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Programs called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). We will also implement Universal Meals at Nesbitt Discovery Academy (NDA). What does this mean for you and your child(ren)? Great news! All enrolled students at Buncombe County Schools are eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at school at no cost to your household each day of the school year. Parents (except those with students at NDA), there are no action steps for you to take at this time to participate in this program. We look forward to serving your students beginning August 28, 2023. NDA parents will receive separate instructions regarding Universal Meals. If you have any questions about this letter, please contact us at Buncombe Schools Nutrition Office, 828 255-5932.

6th grade students explored space in the media center today. Students used VR headsets to explore the International Space Station, worked on a letter from space and made measurements on a Mars map. Thanks to Ms. Johnson, BCS Blended Learning Coach, for helping students learn today. Pics can be seen here - https://photos.app.goo.gl/R8NTNSrp7EjMzo5K8

The Teen Health Career Day is designed for students who have an interest in pursuing a health career. Students who participate in this program will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of healthcare fields, spend time in our state-of-the-art simulation center, hear directly from healthcare providers about their specialties and experiences, enjoy hands-on activities, and much more! I have designed a simple application for students to complete in order to participate as space is limited…. (we can only accommodate up to 30 students!) We will also schedule interviews for applicants to choose who will be able to attend. I would appreciate any volunteers who may be able to assist with interviewing students. This program is designed for students who are outside of the qualifications of students who are able to apply for the MMMP internship. I realize that internship has certain criteria that discourages other students from applying, so this Teen Health Career Day is another way we can expose students to health careers and allow them to enter the pathway to healthcare success! 😊 Here is the criteria to apply: Students must attend a middle or high school in Buncombe or Henderson County. Students must be at least 13 years of age Students must have transportation (drop off and pick up) **Cars cannot be parked on the MAHEC campus during the program** Students must complete the online application on or before June 2nd Students must submit a parent permission form along with their application Each participant of this career day will receive a certificate of participation and will have access to future programs offered by MAHEC’s Department of Health Careers and Diversity Education.
